To avoid problems due to data theft or loss, it is important to know where which data can be stored. This guide provides an overview of the most common file locations and their level of security.

Devices and hard discs

• Memory space:  Depending on the device

• Security
  This is the safest place to store important and sensitive data. Data cannot be stolen or deleted via internet. A backup of the files on a second device protects against data loss if the first storage location is broken or lost.

• Suitable for?
  Sensitive data should only be stored here. This includes personal data (name, e-mail, address) information on bank accounts or financial details or information on companies (e.g. for project co-operations)
  
  Very important files such as the latest project versions or essential project components can also be backed up to your own device or hard drive.

BURG Box

• What is it for?
  Upload and share files

• For whom?
  For all Burg members
  Login with the BURG account

• Memory space: 5GB
• Security
  The BURG Box bears the risk of data theft through a hacker attack, as the account can be accessed from all over the world.
• Suitable for?
  Suitable for storing project files without sensitive data

  Not suitable for any form of sensitive data that contains information about people or companies. (e.g. names, contact details, account information, internal company information)

BURG Netz / VPN

• What is it for?
  Store files on the BURG server and access them from elsewhere.

• For whom?
  For all Burg members
  Access and instructions on request from the Rechenzentrum.

• Memory space: 1 GB

• Security
  The data stored on the server is protected by a firewall and is therefore safe from external access. The Rechenzentrum backs up all data on a daily basis.

• Suitable for?
  Suitable for storing project files 
  
  Not suitable for sensitive data, such as names or other confidential information, as it is still possible to gain access from outside by stealing account information.
   

Google Drive (BURG G Suite)

• What is it for?
  Upload files to the cloud, share them and restore changed and deleted files

• For whom?
  For all Burg members
  Registration via the Rechenzentrum is required.

• Memory space: 100 TB

• Security
  Google guarantees GDPR-compliant handling of files and user data. The data is stored in encrypted form on Google servers located within Europe. This means that the files are located outside the BURG servers posing a risk of data theft and data loss.
• Suitable for?
  Suitable for storing project files that do not contain sensitive data. 

  Not suitable for any form of sensitive data that contains information about individuals or companies. (e.g. names, contact details, account information, internal company information)

Dropbox

• What is it for?
  Upload files to the cloud and share them.
• For whom?
  Freely available, but without BURG access.
• Memory space: 2GB
• Security
  When using Dropbox, it must be assumed that data can be accessed by Dropbox itself or by hackers (happened on nov 22). Data encryption is only possible to a limited extent in the free version.

• Suitable for?
  Unsuitable for project files with content worth protecting, such as ideas, prototypes, artwork or other valuable files.

  Absolutely not suitable for any form of sensitive data that contains information about individuals or companies. (e.g. names, contact details, account information, internal company information)
